Shakespeare Composite Utility Poles Sample Specification
Direct burial, tapered shaft fiberglass reinforced composite [specify] color utility pole shall be [specify] feet overall with a [specify] foot burial depth. The Class [specify] pole shall be equal to or stronger than the same class wood pole (lateral load test minimum failure load: [specify] pounds). The deflection shall be equal to or less than western red cedar. The circumference 6' from the base shall be [specify] inches, nominal.

1. POLE CONSTRUCTION

The pole shaft shall be manufactured by the filament winding process using "E" type continuous fiberglass roving combined with a thermosetting polyester resin. The resin shall be pigmented the same color as the final coating. While the fiberglass is still on the mandrel, a pigmented resin-impregnated, non-woven polyester veil shall be wrapped over the fiberglass. A highly weather resistant pigmented polyurethane coating with a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils shall be applied over the polyester veil. The pole shall be chemically resistant and non-conductive electrically. The interior shall be hollow and have a minimum clear ID of 6 inches. The pole shall be flame resistant in accordance with ASTM D635. Specimens shall cease to burn before the gage mark of 100 mm (3.9 inches is reached).

2. TOP CAP

A removable cap shall be securely mounted to the top of the pole. The cap must remain in place when subjected to maximum wind loads for which the pole is designed.

3. BUTT PLUG

The bottom of the plug shall be securely plugged. The plug shall have an opening(s) to permit any water collecting in the pole base to drain.

4. ID TAG

An aluminum ID tag containing the manufacturer's name or trademark, pole class, length, year and month of manufacture shall be securely attached to the pole 10' from the base.

5. HARDWARE ATTACHMENT

Poles will be drilled per the customers specification for hardware attachment. The minimum separation between holes shall be 6". Field drilling at any point along the length of the pole shall be acceptable. Hardware shall be attached with curved washers on both sides of the pole.

6. STEP ATTACHMENT

When specified, step attachments shall be per specifications. If no specification exists, include Shakespeare specifications.

Step attachments shall be staggered, 14" apart and shall begin [specify] in. or ft. from the base of the pole and end [specify] inches from the top. Where specified, additional step attachments shall be located at 90 degrees to provide access around the pole. Steps will not be furnished with the pole but may be ordered separately from Shakespeare  (catalog 4OPST-1) or from others. Steps shall be AB Chance #6236 or approved equal.

7. PACKAGING

When specified, each pole shall be individually wrapped.
