TECHNICAL SERVICE REPORT
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate
the pull-through
strength of a 5/8" galvanized steel bolt and a 2-1/8" x 2-1/8" x 1/8"
square
curved galvanized steel washer installed one foot from the top of a
T5D30 T&D pole.
Test Procedure and Results
A twelve-foot section from the top of a T5D30 pole was mounted in the test fixture with seven feet of pole remaining above the groundline mounting strap. Holes were drilled through both walls of the pole one foot down from the top of the pole, and a 5/8" galvanized bolt with square washer was passed through the holes. A turnbuckle was threaded onto the end of the bolt, and a 5/8" eyebolt was threaded into the other end of the turnbuckle. An axial load was applied to the eyebolt using a hydraulic cylinder attached to a Dynamometer. The load was progressively increased until the pole wall failed at 3,600 lbs. The failure consisted of fracturing of the laminate around the head of the bolt and square washer. The bolt and washer did not pull through the wall of the pole, but simply collapsed the wall of the pole inward and relieved the load on the bolt. When the load was removed, the pole wall returned to its original shape, although the laminate was splintered inside the pole around the hole. The square washer was permanently deformed.
