TECHNICAL SERVICE REPORT

From: Dennis Bradley
Subject: BOLT TORQUE TEST ON CLASS 5 T&D POLE
Project: 535 TSR: 067

Purpose

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the optimum bolt torque for a 5/8" galvanized steel throughbolt with 2-1/8" x 2-1/8" x 1/8" square curved galvanized steel washers installed on both sides of a T5D30 T&D pole.

Test Procedure

Three tests were performed. Holes were drilled through both walls of a T5D30 pole at distances from the top of one foot, three feet, and twelve feet. A 5/8" galvanized steel bolt with square washer under the head was passed through each set of holes and installed with a second galvanized square washer and galvanized hex nut. A torque wrench was used to tighten the nut until the pole began to noticeable distort. The bolt torque at this point was then recorded. The bolt was then move to the next location and the test repeated for the second and third locations.

Results

The first set of holes were drilled one foot down from the top of the pole in a region where the laminate was approximately 1/2" thick at a turnaround. The second and third sets of holes were drilled in regions of the pole where the laminate was only about 1/4" thick. The pole began to noticeably distort at the following test loads:
